Monster Hunter: Armor Types

I'm willing to accept a certain amount of artistic flair when it comes to female armor, but even I have my limits.

This creates the obvious conflict of interests for me. As a guy, there's a certain appeal to scantily-clad women swinging large swords. As a realist, I also understand the very poor protection these armors would provide to the midriff area.

And back. And neck. And legs. And...well, so forth.

Still, the gender stereotypes are probably here to stay. Which sucks. Because in addition to girls being dressed like strippers in most suits of armor, I'm also not fond of playing as males - their armors tend to look more like small SUVs than outerwear. You'd think occasionally a light vest would be an option.

Some will be quick to tell me that I could just not play as girls in video games. But it goes back to the old adage: "If I'm going to stare at a character's back for five hours at a time, it might as well be a girl."

Jess probably doesn't mind, as she's dating a guy who notices weak points in female armor first.

  1. you know what? females are light... they couldn't wear something heavier than themselves and still jump around freely, and still some stubborn one think they can swing around a greatsword!

  2. See? That's the part I don't get. Light armors are one thing, but if that's the case, how do they carry those enormous swords?

Better yet, how does anyone carry a sword that big?

  3. @Anonymous: Females can't wear heavy armor? As if the pasty-faced gamer geek was any stronger. I know a few females who could swing you around like a greatsword, and they don't even have to kill wyverns on a daily basis.

  4. Which pasty-faced gamer geek? You mean the first Anonymous?

And yes, I agree about strength. For example, my girlfriend can punch me harder in the arm than any human being on the planet. It's a gift, I suppose. But I definitely think frame has more to do with armor-carrying ability than gender.

I am guilty of proliferating this non sequitur. I started a second character in MHT, just for the purpose of wanting to see the smexy femme armors.

  6. And why shouldn't you? I think the game designers spend five times as much time on girl armor than guy armor. Girls get the coolest armor.

  7. The armors are supposed to cater to the Japanese sexual whimsies mind you all since this game is primarily Japanese oriented in it's fanbase. Seriously, they have porn in their arcades. Anyways, both armors are amazing and they all have pros and cons. No point in debating over them.
